The Turners, The Tricketts and The Webb Waggs
I've previously written about our search for the birth family of our patriarch, William Webb Wagg. As we approach Mother's Day, it's timely to look at the birth family of our matriarch, Sarah Turner.
The first clue is in the 1853 marriage registration of William Wagg and Sarah Turner at St James, Sydney. We see the witnesses named as George Fairfield of Sussex Street and Jane Turner of George Street.
Sarah's 1918 death registration records the names of her parents as George Turner (a shipwright) and Sarah. The witnesses to the death registration are Sarah's sons, William Webb Wagg and Charles Webb Wagg. They record Sarah's age as 86 - birth around 1832 in Sydney.
As Sarah's birth was so early in the colonies history, there are no birth registrations. However, we've found a baptism transcript for Sarah Turner at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. It records that Sarah was born on 21 October 1932 and baptised on 09 December 1832. Her father is shown as George Turner, "ship carpenter Brig Irvoine" but no mother is recorded. Sarah's sponsors are shown as "John Rowell, Quarry Man, to be a Catholic and Miss Ellen Downey".
The search turned to Jane Turner who was a witness at William and Sarah's marriage. Was she Sarah's sister? The answer came with the 1864 marriage registration of John Trickett and Jane Turner at St Thomas Church North Sydney. A 24 year old Jane is shown as living at St Leonards at the time of her marriage. Her parents are recorded as George Turner, shipwright, and Mary Hand. John Trickett is shown as a 22 year old waterman living at Greenwich. His parents are recorded as George Trickett, a shoemaker, and Mary Annan. The witnesses to the marriage are Sarah Mary Trickett and William W Wagg.
There is a question about Jane Turner's birth date for another day. Could a 13 year old Jane witness the wedding of her sister, Sarah, to William Wagg in 1853?
John and Jane Trickett were married for nearly 30 years until John, a quarryman, died in late January 1891. Jane died on 21 June 1892 at Myrtle Street, North Sydney. The witnesses on Jane's death registration are Edward George Trickett, her son, and Charles Webb, her nephew.
The Tricketts had eight children but three died as children - Emily Annie (1865 to 1867), Edward George (1867 to 1940), Emily May (1869 to 1900), Florence Annie (1871 to 1932), Maria Jane (1874 to 1889), Edith Eleanor "Nellie" (1876 to 1945), John William (1878 to 1955) and Arthur Albert (1880 to 1881).
Family of John and Jane Trickett |
As you can see above, Edward George Trickett (1867 to 1940) is the only of John and Jane's children to have children. Edward George married Sabina "Bina" McManus in 1906 and they had two children, John (1906 to 1957) and Edward Bede (1908 to 1965). In 1941, Edward Bede married Bernice Clare Drew (1916 to 2004) and they went on to have two children who I've recently been in contact with!
This means that we're in contact with descendants from each branch of George Turner's two daughters. At this time, we're fairly confident that Mary Ann Hand was the mother of both Sarah and Jane. But more of this another time.....
The close links between the Tricketts and Webb Waggs is shown in Grandpa Webb's 1905 death notices - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14684374
I'd like to acknowledge again the hard work of Leonie Webb-Wagg over many years in following the story of our family. She's traced a lot of the story through the records of St Thomas Church at North Sydney.
The Webb-Wagg and Trickett families celebrated baptisms and marriages and mourned at funerals here.

Towards the top of this page you'll see the 29 July 1874 baptisms of Maria Jane Trickett (born 02 April 1874) and William John Wagg (born 19 January 1874). Maria Jane died in 1889 at only 15 years of age.
William and Sarah Webb Wagg, John and Jane Trickett and many of their extended family are buried at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery.
